Marketing your Coffee Business in April

coffee-rainAh, Spring is in the air … bees buzzing, birds chirping, flowers pollinating and coffee brewing.

We’re all familiar with April Fool’s Day, Palm Sunday, Passover, Good Friday and Easter … but there are many month-long celebrations in April too.

Welcome to our little list of April Marketing ideas for coffee shops.

National Autism Awareness Month – Donate a percentage of all April sales to your local (or national) Autism charity.

International Guitar Month – Support your local musicians by inviting different performers to your venue all month long … but if you’re not into the whole “live music” thing, than support your local poets instead by celebrating National Poetry Month.

Keep America Beautiful Month – Have a recycling drive all month long inside your shop or ask your employees for volunteers to help keep the community clean all month long … and you can celebrate National Volunteer Month at the same time, how perfect!

Don’t forget to highlight the fact that it’s Stress Awareness Month. You could have a daily 2-3 pm Happy Hour with a generous discount on all espresso drinks all month long … your regulars will appreciate an uncommon discount and the newbies will have a month to switch to the habit of visiting your coffee shop for their afternoon pick-me-up.

It also happens to be Child Abuse Prevention month and About.com has created an awesome list of activities that you could promote as well. What a wonderful reminder for those of your customers that are parents to take a little time each day and strengthen their relationship with their kids.

And while I hate to be a reminder of bad news … don’t forget that April 15th is Income Tax Day :-(

Coffee Marketing Pro Announcing Launch

Chase and I are excited to announce the launch of our new business, Coffee marketing Pro.

While slinging coffee and moving up within the coffee industry, we helped our bosses with marketing strategies and put our backgrounds of graphic design, web design and writing to use. Which increased sales. After a year of networking and outsourcing each others specialized services, we decided to officially team up and start Coffee Marketing Pro.

Marketing in the coffee industry confuses consumers and  the specialty coffee section needs to really stand apart for its quality with ethical marketing that educates consumers correctly, all at an affordable price. We also realize roasters need simple, organized procedures like administrative tasks to keep them organized and save money.

If we had 28 hours in a day we MIGHT be able to accomplish everything. Unfortunately we don’t and are excited that true coffee people with other talents want to get involved. We don’t have enough hands to meet the demand of daily business and all the services offered could be of added value to Kohana Coffee. We think it’s a smart idea and are tipping our hats to Jennifer and Chase for bringing it to market. ~ Piper Jones, VP of Operations at Kohana Coffee

With this in mind, Coffee Marketing Pro was created based on passion and experience in the industry to offer a marketing powerhouse for specialty coffee companies like high quality cafes, roasters and suppliers, to improve the industry as a whole.

7 Ways to Market your Local Coffee Shop

To help out a friend on Barista Exchange, I created a small list of ideas on how I would tackle her marketing problem if I were in the same situation (the theme is local, local, local):

#1 Create a Customer Database

Too many coffee business owners just don’t do that, but there’s no excuse not to with so many options and price-points available. A free CRM is ZohoCRM, but there’s a good comparison at BusinessInsider.com. I personally use Act by Sage, Outlook & OneNote because those fit best into my work-flow on my tablet pc (which I LOVE).
